Security Through the General A practical alliance Mother of Nitta Okiya arranges for Sayuri to become the mistress of General Tottori, valuing the supplies and protection his position can provide. Sayuri accepts the arrangement even though it is not the future she wanted. The relationship is transactional and largely unromantic. General Tottori covers expenses and helps the household obtain scarce goods, while Sayuri continues her work in Gion and tries to contain her disappointment. A fragile shelter As war intensifies, the General’s official influence becomes essential to the okiya. His access to supplies and military connections helps the household remain comparatively secure while shortages spread through Japan. That security depends on political power, not on Sayuri’s independent choices. When the General’s position collapses, the protection surrounding her world will disappear with it.

The End of Protection A visit from the authorities A military policeman arrives at Nitta Okiya and inspects its garden, questioning why it has not been converted to grow vegetables. He presents a list of wartime violations that reflect the household’s hoarding and its privileged access to scarce goods. Mother of Nitta Okiya returns and quietly tells Sayuri that General Tottori has been taken into custody. She orders the household to hide its valuables before the authorities take them. Privilege stripped away The okiya loses its special access to food, linens, and other necessities. Ceramics and scrolls are confiscated or sold, and the household must endure shortages that its earlier protection had delayed. Sayuri experiences the change as an abrupt fall from safety. The war has reached the private world of Gion, and the collapse of the General’s standing makes the future of every person there uncertain.

A Profession Interrupted Closure announced While waiting in line for rice, Sayuri hears that the government has ordered the geisha districts closed and directed geisha to report to the registry office. The news threatens not only her career but her ability to avoid factory labor. Across Gion, women begin seeking refuge with the men who once visited them. Sayuri turns first to General Tottori, but he tells her he no longer has the influence to protect her. Nobu’s offer Sayuri then approaches Nobu, who has been absent from her life for years. He rebukes her, but offers a place of safety with his friend Arashino Isamu, whose family needs help making parachutes. She accepts the refuge, knowing that the arrangement places her in Nobu’s debt. The move saves her from the factories, but takes her away from the profession and community that had defined her adult life.

Survival Beyond Gion Work and deprivation Sayuri lives and works with the Arashino family, sewing parachutes and sleeping in the workshop. Food is scarce, and the household survives on substitutes and whatever small supplies it can obtain. Air raids destroy homes and factories across the country. Sayuri worries about people she has left behind, including the Chairman and Nobu, while recognizing that she cannot return to Gion or control what happens to them. Identity stripped back Years of hunger and manual work alter Sayuri’s body and hands. Without kimono, makeup, performances, or the status of Gion, she questions whether she remains a geisha at all. Her life with the Arashino family is a test of survival rather than advancement. The hardship exposes the difference between her cultivated public identity and the person who must endure when that identity’s institutions vanish.

Returning to a Lost World Japan after defeat After Japan’s surrender, Sayuri remains with the Arashino family, helping make dyes as the household begins to rebuild its work. The geisha districts reopen, but Sayuri cannot return until Mother of Nitta Okiya decides to resume the okiya. A brief visit to Gion shows her familiar streets crowded with poverty and changed beyond easy recognition. She sees it as an outsider, surrounded by memories of the people and places that once shaped her life. A home reclaimed Nobu eventually visits and tells Sayuri plainly that he wants her back in Gion. His insistence prompts her to write to Mother, and Auntie arrives at the Arashino household to bring her home. Sayuri returns to a neglected okiya and a diminished district, then begins preparing to work again. The return restores her professional identity, but cannot restore the prewar world she remembers.
